Reasons For Braces

If you are being faced with the fact that you may have to get braces, then you should know that there is nothing wrong with that. Millions of people all of the country and Canada get braces, most of which are younger than 18 years old. Having braces does a lot of good for your teeth and overall health of your mouth.

TREATING MALOCCLUSION

Orthodontists use braces to treat a malocclusion, which is a bad bite. If you have a perfect bite, then your teeth are straight with just enough space in between to help with chewing. The top teeth will also slightly overlap the bottom teeth.

CAUSES OF BAD BITES

Most of our bites are inherited from our parents or genetic line. However, sucking on the thumb or fingers can also contribute to having a bad bite. Because of this reasoning as to why people have bad bites, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have a checkup with an orthodontist no later than age seven.

EARLY TREATMENT

Some children may be candidates for having early treatment, but there are certain things that need to be considered, like if the child has all of their permanent teeth. It would be best to consult with an orthodontist for the best advice.

BRACES HELP

When you do not have straight teeth, having braces can really help with the alignment of your jaw and teeth. Braces are made up of tiny brackets which are clued to the teeth and then connected with thin wires. The wires actually more he teeth. If you are not a fan of the traditional braces, there are other types of braces that you can get which will help to straighten your teeth.

THERE ARE BRACES APPLIANCES

Depending on the severity of your teeth and jaw, your orthodontist may require you to have a headgear which will wrap around the neck or head. Rubber bands are also used in the treatment of braces. The rubber bands will help to move the teeth in directions that braces themselves cannot. It is important that you listen to your orthodontist on the direction they give when it comes to using the appliances or you may find yourself in the braces for longer than you originally anticipated.

PRESSURE AND TIME

The way that braces work is over a period of time with pressure being placed on the teeth. Treatment can last from one to three years, with the average being two years. The good thing about braces right now, is that they are made with stronger materiel so you do not have to see the orthodontist as often as usual. This means that you will have to miss less school for your dentist appointments.

DISCOMFORT

When braces are first put on, you may experience discomfort. The reason for this is because there is now a tight wire across your teeth which are slowly moving your teeth into a direction which will straighten them out. Some people may experience irritation of the cheeks, but in time you will adjust. The discomfort that you are feeling can be helped with over-the-counter pain medication.

RETAINERS

Once you get the braces off, your orthodontist is probably going to have you wear your retainer. The reason for this is so that you can maintain the beautiful smile that you now have. If you do not wear your braces, then you run the risk of having your teeth shift back out of place.

Braces are a very common part of life that many people have to go through. When you are wearing braces, the best thing that you can do is to listen to your orthodontist. They will be able to provide you with the best advice so that your teeth will straighten as quickly as possible.
