Taking Care of Your Retainer

Posted by on August 7, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

The best thing about braces is getting them off. You have probably had your braces on for about two years, and now you have a straight smile. When you get your braces off, your orthodontist is going to give you a retainer that you are going to have to wear. It may be frustrating to have to wear a retainer after wearing braces for so long.

There are certain rules that you should follow when you are given a retainer.

RULE # 1

Wear your retainers the entire time that your doctor has instructed

RULE # 2

Do not eat while wearing your retainer. You should take your retainer out and put it in its case.

RULE # 3

Clean your retainer thoroughly at least once a day. To do this you can use your toothbrush and toothpaste.

RULE # 4

Always keep your retainers in their case while you are not wearing them.

RULE # 5

Do not put your retainers in hot water, the dashboard of your car, pockets, washing machine or napkins.

When it comes to wearing retainers it is important that you follow the basic rules. If you follow these rules, your retainer will be able to last a long time without having to be repaired. If you have any questions, or need braces, then you can contact Griffiths & Simister Orthodontics—your Las Vegas orthodontist—today.

Technology Advances

Posted by on August 6, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Technology is no longer just for our own personal use. Instead, orthodontics has been able to greatly benefit from technology. One way that technology has helped to change the industry, is by impressions of teeth.

The conventional way of taking impressions of teeth is actually a messy process. When you are first getting braces, your orthodontist is going to have to take an impression of your teeth. In order to do this, the orthodontist would have to use a type of dental goop to put in your mouth. When this would happen you would not be comfortable, and may get the gagging feeling.

Now, orthodontists are able to take impressions of your mouth by using digital technology. Your orthodontist is going to be able to take digital impressions by scanning your mouth. The digital image will then result in a 3D model that is more accurate. This type of technology can be used for any type of orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign.

When it comes to orthodontics, Griffiths & Simister Orthodontics are using the latest technology. They will be able to help make sure that your treatment with them is done as good as possible.

Dental Appliances

Posted by on August 5, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

When you get braces, there may be many different types of appliances or accessories that you are going to use before, during, and after treatment.

RUBBER BANDS

Rubber bands are used during your treatment. They are used as an aid to help your teeth fit together. Many people do not wear their bands the way that they should. By not wearing their bands, people delay the progress of their treatment, meaning that they are going to be in the braces for a longer period of time.

HEADGEAR

Headgear is most commonly used with people who have an overbite or an underbite. While headgear is not commonly used, there are some circumstances where it is used to gently pull the teeth restricting further forward growth of the upper teeth and jaw.

BITE PLATE

A bite plate is a type of retainer that is used to correct a deepbite, which can cause accelerated wear on the edges of the incisors.

TONGUE CRIB

The tongue crib is used for people who have the condition known as “tongue thrust”. Tongue thrust is when the tongue pushes against teeth during swallowing. When this happens, your tongue can actually move your teeth, causing gaps, openbites, or tipped teeth. The tongue crib is used to keep the tongue from pressing against the upper and lower teeth during swallowing.

PALATAL EXPANDER

An expander, expands or widens your upper jaw by gently putting pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. The expander is cemented to the molar teeth in order to create the palatal expansion.

RETAINERS

Retainers are usually given at the end of treatment. They are able to hold your teeth in the correct position. If you do not wear your retainer, as instructed, then your teeth can actually go back to their original shape, undoing the work that the braces fixed.

When you have orthodontic accessories or appliances, it is important that you use them the way that your orthodontist explained. If you do not wear them correctly, then progress can be delayed. Griffiths & Simister Orthodontics—your Las Vegas orthodontist—can help to make your teeth straight. Call them today for an appointment.

Types of Braces

Posted by on August 4, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Braces are something that many people are going to have to get. For many people, their teeth simply do not grow in straight. When that is the case, braces are usually considered. Braces are used to straighten crooked teeth, leaving the patient with beautiful and healthy teeth.

Many people think that there is only one type of braces that they are able to get. But, in all actuality there are several different options that people have. People are able to choose from traditional metal braces, gold braces, ceramic braces, or Invisalign.

METAL BRACES

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. They are usually made of stainless steel, and they require the use of metal brackets and archwires to straighten the teeth. You are able to put colored elastics on the brackets to give a more colorful smile.

GOLD BRACES

Gold braces are similar to metal braces, but the stainless steel is coted in gold. These are usually chosen for cosmetic reasons.

CERAMIC BRACES

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials which cause them to be less visible on teeth than the traditional metal braces. Older teenagers or adults usually lean towards ceramic braces because they are less noticeable.

INVISALIGN

Invisalign is a type of braces that uses a series of invisible, removable, aligners to straighten your teeth. The aligners are removable so you will be able to eat and drink what you want without worrying about breaking the braces. You will also have an easier time cleaning your teeth with Invisalign.

Getting braces does not mean the end of the world. Griffiths & Simister Orthodontics offers an array of braces that you can choose from. You will be able to have a say in what your teeth are going to look like while you have braces on. Call Griffiths & Simister Orthodontics—your Las Vegas orthodontist—today so that you can get the smile that you want.

The Invisible Braces

Posted by on July 30, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

There are many different types of braces that you can get. You do not have to simply have the traditional braces. In fact, you can get braces that no one can even see. Invisalign was a great revolution to orthodontics. Now, people who want to have straight teeth, but do not want to have to have metal over their teeth are able to have braces.

There are some great things that Invisalign has to offer. Invisalign has a 96% satisfaction rate. Invisalign helps you get healthier gums, easier cleanings, and you have a decreased risk of abnormal wear. Invisalign will not only help to straighten teeth, but it will help with crowding, spacing, overbite, under bite and a deep bite.

If you go for an Invisalign treatment, then you will have about eight to twelve trays until you get the desired results. The eight to twelve trays that you get are all going to be different. The different trays are going to give you the results that you need. These trays are going to be changed at about every two weeks. The benefit with this is that you are not going to have to see the orthodontist very often.

Using Invisalign instead of traditional metal braces is something that can make the experience of braces a lot different. While using Invisalign you need to have a lot of self discipline, since you are able to remove the trays from your teeth.

If you are in need of braces, but you do not want traditional braces, then Invisalign is a great option for you. Call Griffiths Simister Orthodontics—your Las Vegas orthodontist—today.

What You Should Eat

Posted by on July 29, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Getting straight teeth isn’t something that is easy. When you are in braces, you are in them for several years. Your teeth will move, but it will be a slow move. When you have braces, some things are going to have to change. You now have metal strapped across your teeth. When you first get the braces on, you may experience some pain.  When you have pain, you can take over-the-counter medication to get rid of the pain.

When you do have braces, you should know that there are some things that you should not eat while you have the braces on. Certain foods can break the brackets which can result in you being in the braces for a longer period of time. While you can eat a lot, there are some things that you should try to avoid. Those foods are: chewy foods like bagels or licorice, crunchy foods like popcorn, chips or ice, sticky foods like caramel candies, hard foods like nuts and hard candies, or foods that require biting into corn on the cob, apples, or carrots.

While there are foods that you should definitely stay away from, there are many foods that you can eat. You are able to eat dairy foods like soft cheese, pudding, and milk based drinks, breads like soft tortillas, pancakes, and muffins without nuts, grains like pasta or soft cooked rice, meats like soft cooked chicken, meatballs and lunch meats, seafood like tuna, salmon and crab cakes, vegetables like mashed potatoes, steamed spinach and beans, fruits like applesauce, bananas and fruit juice, treats like ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, Jell-O and soft cake, and sugar free gum.

When you have braces on it is important that you take care of them. The braces are created to help straighten your teeth so if parts of the braces break, then your teeth are not being straightened. If something on your braces brakes, then it is important that you contact your orthodontist right away so that you can get your braces fixed.

Wearing Your Retainer

Posted by on July 16, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Getting your braces off is a great accomplishment. However, when you get your braces off, you are not done with your treatment. After your braces, you are most likely going to need to wear a retainer. Here are some facts about retainers:

  • Your teeth shift over time so having a good retainer can help to keep your teeth from shifting after your braces
  • You should wear your retainer for the rest of your life to ensure your smile stays beautiful
  • Follow your orthodontists instructions about your retainer. Usually for the first few months after the braces are taken off you will have to wear your retainer all of the time. But in no time at all you will be moved to wearing your retainer only at night.
  • Speaking with a retainer is going to be difficult at first, but in time you will get used to them
  • Do not eat with your retainer in your mouth
  • Always put your retainer in the case when it is not in your mouth
  • Do not wear your retainers while you are swimming
  • Keep your retainer away from hot water
  • Clean your retainer with your toothbrush once a day

Even after you do not have your braces any more, it is important that you continue to take care of your teeth. Wearing your retainer will help to keep your teeth straight even after your braces are off.
